Stepping back

Posted: March 31, 2014 in politics, Sixties

The older I become, the more I find that the subjects I’m interested in are changing. It used to be electronics, flying and computer programming. Now I lean more to music, movies and writing. It seems I’m changing my self-study major from the sciences to the liberal arts. I’m much more proficient at the natural sciences. But as I age, I find myself more and more interested in the more subjective things of life.

Shamelessly I have been reposting many stories and poems I wrote 3 or 4 years ago from a different blog. All of them have been work that I think is good and I enjoy reading them, too. It saves time to just go back to the vault every few days and just pick out something to post. Sort of like going to the closet and picking out a shirt or different pair of shoes to wear. I know it is lazy. But none of them have been posted here on WP before and I do have all new readers so it’s not like I am becoming a total retread. I just think of them, the poems and stories, as being re-mastered. Sometimes it is good to go back and review what was done years ago sometimes it’s not.

You may have noticed I have left out politics from my interests. I used to love politics, I am still interested, but I just don’t love it anymore. I do know this, in the next 2 or 3 years of elections we are in danger of drastically changing the landscape of this country. I feel if the conservatives gain control of all three branches, we will be set back 50 years of civil rights progress and un-reigned capitalism may abound. Just look at what’s happening in the individual States that are conservative controlled. You may agree with those changes, you may not, but at the national level if those kinds of changes are made we will be cast back to pre-1964, which I remember clearly. Voting and civil rights, poverty legislation, Medicare, Roe vs Wade and even teaching of evolution will all be put on the table. Issues we thought were addressed properly years ago will all be challenged again. I do not want to go back to that era. Keep your eyes and ears open. We can’t let stepping back happen.

I was in junior high and high school during those turbulent times of the 60’s. I was president of the young Democrats all through high school. Involved in local politics, but a little too young to participate in the protests and demonstrations of that time. I’m afraid I may get my chance again but at a more advanced age.

  1. I have aways hated politics, now I find I’mnot particularly fond of religion either. That I am signing petitions, participating in heated discussions about a broad spectrum of civil rights issues is not a great sign. Stepping back to gain a different or better perspective is a reasonable thing, on many occassions, but the Christian Conservatives are trying their hardest to railroad us back to a time when Christian White Males thought themselves superior to everyone else.
Sadly, a large portion of the population thinks this is a good thing, and many of those who oppose such a move philosophically are too damned apathetic to stand against it. It truly angers me, because there are SO MANY THINGS I WANT TO DO, and when push comes to shove I will also be out in the streets protesting, instead.

REALLY pissed off that I have to be there.

    • Pissed off is the polite way of saying it Sandra. All of these issues were settled long ago. Like a half a century ago. I have yet to hear an interviewer / reporter on any network question or challenge the outrageous statements and claims presented by the Right. They make these broad un-sourced statements and mechanical talking points and no one challenges them. Are we the only ones seeing through this bullshit?

50 – 55 years ago, the fucking establishment had me and my classmates hiding under school desks to protect us from a nuclear blast for Christ’s sake! We were old enough to be drafted but not old enough to have a beer at a local bar. They were blowing people off the sidewalks with fire hoses and police dogs because they were protesting not being able to buy a frickin sandwich at a “white” restaurant or ride in any seat they wanted on a bus. Voting was out of the question for so many people. They wanted women to believe that they had to have spotless houses, wear dinner dresses and act like Donna Reed or Doris Day. And now they want to go back to that kind of a mean and unfair supremacy. They are nuts, crazy and I don’t adhere to it or to those that spew that crap. I will do what I can to prevent it.

Instead of talking about the Voting Rights bill being nullified, our homes and phone calls being spied on and every thing we say recorded in big black buildings in the middle of no frickin where and stopping this outlandish drone warfare we are conducting, they are talking about and distracting our attention by talking about not allowing importing oil from Canada. Our civil rights are being pissed on by the crazy bastards in Washington. To allow the Right to do anymore damage than what’s already been done is madness.

I’ll start making up banners any time you pick a protest! Scary out there isn’t it.

  3. Good write.
My interests have changed some, too.
Things are scary in our country today. I guess the Pollyanna in me wants people to wake up and make positive changes…but it seems things are not getting any better. Does it seem we as a nation are going backwards?! 😦
As for your posts…repost away! I enjoy whatever you share!
    HUGS!!! 🙂

    • No, not going backwards, things are recovering very nicely, the markets doubled, steady job growth for many, many months now, we have gotten out of one war and winding down another, we have stayed out of at least three middle east conflicts in Egypt, Libya, and Syria. We are just cleaning up the mess of 8 GW Bush years. Next thing that must be cleared up is this ridiculous, unbridled home land security program. I think Obama will clamp down more on that in the next year or two or before he leaves office. But the Right through their propaganda wants everyone believing things are not better.
The only places we are going backwards are in the individual Right wing controlled states and the strange US Supreme court decisions.
What I’m worried about is if they get in power again, any progress we have made will be lost. Then we will be going backwards.

  4. I totally get where you’re coming from here. I have no time for stuff I can’t make a positive impact upon. Great post! 🙂

I’m glad you left the politics out – it gets my blood pressure up. Doing the research for the upcoming posts on what caused WWII is about to give me a stroke!
